Testing Microsoft Live Writer
Just a quick test to see if Microsoft Live Writer is any good for blog editing
Just an update
Been very quiet here over the past year. Main reason is that I have been very busy with the part time MSc that I am doing through Glasgow University’s postgraduate programme.
More later, but I have been looking at the rocks of the Loch Uisg / Loch Buie area – granophyre and gabbro.
Anyway, more stuff soon!

Class information
South West Mull Geology Classes – 2008
Format: An introductory talk about the Geology of Mull and Iona. One Evening Class which will cover the basics A series of Field Excursions, each of which will start with a short talkIntroductory Talk:The introductory talk is called “Mull and Iona – A Geological Journey” and takes the form of an illustrated slide show. The journey starts in Iona, goes to Craignure and up to Tobermory. It then crosses over to the west side and includes Calgary, Ulva, Gribun and the Wilderness. The journey finishes at Pennyghael. The talk takes place on the 28th January at the Baptist Church in Bunessan at 8pmThe talk will be followed by a short question and answer session and if anyone wants to sign up for the course, they can do so at that time. There is no obligation however – if people want to come along just for the talk, that’s fine. There is a small fee for the talk.
The Evening Class:
Because of the logistics of having a class in Bunessan and a tutor in Tobermory, it was decided to concentrate on field excursions rather than classroom based lectures. Previous experience has shown that the field excursions are the favourite part of the course anyway. The evening class will cover the basics of the geology of Mull and Iona and will look at the most important features of the area. Because of the size of the subject and the limited time available, it will not be possible to go into it in great depth. The field excursions however shuld provide a good opportunity to relate the theories and concepts to actual rocks. The evening class will take place on the 4th of February at 8pm.
The Field Excursions:
These will take place on Saturdays, mainly in South West Mull and will include visits to Iona, Ardtun, Ardalanish, Carsaig, Fionnphort, Gribun and hopefully Ulva. When and where these take place will depend on the weather and the tides. The tide is not a major health and safety issue, but when it is out, a lot more geology becomes visible – this is especially true of Carsaig which is arguably the best geological locality in Mull. Whether a trip goes ahead or neot depends on these two factors, and it may be that a trip has to be postponed at the last minute (or rather the night before). Please be aware of this. This point cannot be stressed enough. The dates for the field excursions have not been established yet – these will be provisionally set up after the class on the 4th February. In order to make communications easier, the tutor has set up an email list, a weblog (blog) and an online forum. By using internet technology it is much easier to keep in contact – phoning simply takes too much time, esp with a large group.
